Area Map
There was a prison for felons in Abashiri, a place facing the Sea of Okhotsk and have an extremely cold climate in the winter. In 1984, the prison facility was moved and the site was redesigned and reborn as an unusual facility even in the world: Abashiri Prison Museum. Cells in a radial design, the shower room and the red brick gate have been reconstructed, and visitors can taste the prison food, a recreated meal based on the menu in those days. The museum is not the only attraction in the area. You can experience the extreme cold atmosphere even in the summer at Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum, study the history of the area at Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples, and enjoy the fresh marine products at the local restaurants.
