Dejima was the only trading port open to the world for about 200 years of the National Isolation Period. It is a small artificial island of just 1.5-hectare, built as a part of Japan’s isolation policy, and there used to be about fifty buildings including trading houses, warehouses, and residences. The island was the only place where foreigners were allowed to land - it was strictly prohibited to go outside the island. However, the wealth of information brought into the small island from the world was spread to all over Japan, and became a driving power of opening Japan to the world, changing the history of Japan. After Japan opened herself to the world, the island's role was finished. The island was filled in and disappeared from the history. However, a restoration work started about sixty years ago, and now you can see the appearance of those days.
