Once prospered as a temple town, then as a post town on Nakasendo highway during the Edo Period, Urawa became the prefectural capital of Saitama Prefecture after the Meiji Restoration and played a central role of the prefectural government for more than 100 years. As the first railway station was opened associated with the establishment of the prefectural office, the urbanization went on and many public educational facilities were established. The popularization of soccer coincided with the increase of the number of public schools in the city. Now the city is the base of the professional soccer team, Urawa Red Diamonds, and the home stadium is always full of enthusiastic fans. The city is also famous for eels. You should try the local taste of eel. It's very delicious.
