Hagi
Historic town, retaining the old townscape of Edo Period.
Area Map
Hagi City, facing the Sea of Japan, used to prosper as a castle town of Mori Terumoto who built a castle there in 1609. The town retains the old townscape of Edo Period including the Hagi Castle, samurai residences, temples, and traditional townhouses as well as the unique zig-zag alleyways called “kaimagari” that prevent enemies approaching the castle. Maps drawn in Edo Period can be still used here in Hagi, making the city more popular among many history buffs and tourists. Shokason-juku, a private school that produced many historical figures at the time of Meiji Restoration when Japan was reborn as a modern nation from the feudal Edo, is remaining intact on the same spot.
