Area Map
Ohara Museum of Art was founded in 1930 by Ohahara Sonsaburo, an industrialist in Kurashiki, to commemorate the works of Kodama Torajiro, a painter who passed away a year before the foundation. This is the first privately-run museum for Western art in Japan. The Greek temple style main hall exhibits works of famous artists from all over the world such as El Greco, Gauguin, Paul Cezanne, Manet, and Monet. The range of exhibition covers Western artists as well as modern and current Japanese artists. At the ivy-twined entrance, a sculpture of John the Baptist by Francois-Auguste-Rene Rodin, and a statue of the burghers of Calis by Jean Daire, welcomes visitors. You can also visit the Annex, the Craft Art Gallery, the Asiatic Art Gallery and Kojima Torajiro Memorial Hall adjacent to the main hall. For art fans, the museum shop has a great line-up of art-related goods .
